Prices on a screen feel abstract. $49.99 is just a number. But the money you spend came from somewhere: hours of your time at work. When you see the price in hours, it becomes much easier to decide if something is worth it.

How to calculate it

Take the price and divide it by what you earn per hour (after tax, if you can).

Price ÷ hourly pay = hours of work

For example, if you take home $20 an hour:

• A $6 coffee = 18 minutes of work
• A $60 pair of shoes = 3 hours of work
• A $250 pair of headphones = 12.5 hours, more than a full day

Small things add up

This trick is especially strong for small, repeated purchases. A $6 coffee every workday is about $130 a month, which is 6.5 hours of work. That doesn't mean you should give up coffee. It means you get to decide if it's worth it to you.

Ask the right question

Instead of "Can I afford it?", ask: "Would I work X hours for this?" Sometimes the answer is yes, and that's great. Sometimes it's a clear no.
