The 48-hour rule: why waiting before you buy works
The idea is simple: when you want to buy something that isn't essential, you don't buy it right away. You wait 48 hours. If you still want it after two days, you buy it. If not, you just saved money.
Why it works
The urge to buy is strongest in the moment: you just saw the ad, the discount ends soon, the photo looks perfect. That feeling fades quickly. After a day or two you look at the same item with a calmer head and can ask the real questions: Do I need it? Where will I use it? Is it worth the money?
How to use it
- Write it down. Save the item in a list with the price. You're not saying "no", you're saying "not yet".
- Set a reminder. Come back to it in 48 hours and decide.
- Decide without guilt. If you still want it, buy it and enjoy it. That's a purchase on purpose.
"But the sale ends today!"
This is exactly what time pressure is designed to do. Ask yourself: would I buy this at full price? If the answer is no, the discount isn't saving you money. And sales come back more often than it seems.
Adjust the time to the price
48 hours is a good default. For small things, one night is enough. For bigger purchases, like a phone or a TV, a week or even a month makes sense.
In ThinkTwice!
The "Remind me" button puts the item in a waiting list and reminds you to decide after 48 hours, or any time you choose. If you decide to skip it, the amount is added to "Saved so far".
ב-ThinkTwice!
